Beastly Bible Stories series launch in Edinburgh
I will be launching the complete series of Beastly Bible Stories as part of the Christian Aid Book Sale and Festival in Edinburgh in May 2017. Lots of local Primary School children have been invited – are they brave enough for Beastly Bible Stories?! I’m really looking forward to being part of this exciting event.
Beastly Bible Stories at CRE International
“Should we really tell children about all the guts and gore in the Bible?” Yes! Children love bloodthirsty stories and the Bible is full of them. They need to learn that the Bible is more than friendly tales about animals, angels and the baby Jesus – they need to know the whole gory story. If children understand the blood, battles and sacrifices of the Old Testament, they will get why grisly Good Friday is called ‘good’ – they will grasp the gore and wonder of the Easter story.
I discussed Beastly Bible Stories at CRE International, where I was part of a panel debating the question: ‘Is the Bible really suitable for children?’ We had a really interesting debate which raised some challenging questions about how we handle the more difficult stories in the Bible, and whether some of them aren’t really suitable for grown-ups, either! The full series of Beastly Bible Stories 1-8 are now available from www.kevinmayhew.com Click here for more information.
Recent training events have taken me across Scotland, England and beyond, from the Diocese of Aberdeen and Orkney, where I led a workshop on children’s ministry & storytelling, to a Primary school in the Diocese of Truro, where I helped to create a brand new ‘spiritual space’ in the school grounds. I travelled to the Isle of Man at the request of the Diocese of Sodor and Man and there’s been ecumenical work, too, for the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh. I’ve also enjoyed leading INSET training for head teachers, teachers and teaching assistants in the Diocese of Carlisle. During my travels I’m enjoying meeting people with a passion for children’s ministry!
I am now taking bookings nationwide for:
- ‘Taste and See’ events – a practical introduction to children’s spirituality, Bible storytelling & creative prayer
- Teaching and Learning Styles – an inspiring training day about using the full spectrum of teaching and learning styles with children and all-age groups in church
- All-age worship training
- INSET: Children’s spirituality in schools – training for headteachers, governors, teachers and clergy
Please contact me if you would like further information. I can offer half-day or full-day workshops, or meet your particular requirements.
